VIETNAM FEATURES - Laying the foundations for spiritual ...

VIETNAM'S newly formed Cham Society aims to ensure the county's ancient Cham remains - the temples of My Son that date back to the 4th Century become as well known as Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

My Son is Vietnam's most important Cham settlement. The little known historical treasure is buried deep in the jungle of Central Vietnam, just over an hour's drive from Danang.

The Cham Society is dedicated to the research, study and preservation of the Champa lifestyle and spiritual laws. It is seeking the support of UNESCO and the World Monument Fund to conserve My Son as a world heritage site and has invited archaeologists to excavate what is estimated to be 150 stone temples scattered throughout the valley.

A Cham centre is planned for My Son, with meditation rooms, a library, arts and handicrafts and the teaching of martial arts. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the art and culture of the Cham people. Part of the main Champa temple will be dedicated to the teachings of ancient Champa doctrines.

Furama Resort Danang general manager is a founding member of the Cham society. He said, "Once it is firmly established at My Son, the society's objective will be to establish temples in major cities around the world, which will be incorporated into lifestyle designed "Cham hotels". These hotels would generate their own members and ultimately become part of an international network providing a unique style of hospitality and spiritual environment which reflects the Champa teachings and lifestyle."
