HONEYMOON DESTINATIONS - Is Japan losing romance?

Yarrum Yeliab

THE honeymoon business from Japan is fading, with the daily spend expected to fall 15 per cent this year, which means it will have fallen almost 40 per cent since the start of this decade, see Table 1.

Japan Travel Bureau, which runs the surveys, has listed other destinations, showing the top five, see Table 2.

In 1999, the US is expected to run away with the title of most-visited destination, with Hawaii just bettering the mainland.

But that is the pattern only in Tokyo; in Nagoya and Osaka, the mainland is more visited than Hawaii.

Europe is most popular in Nagoya, which makes it ironic that this centre has lost some flights to Europe in the current downturn. The big loser is Australia, which was in second place in 1995, and the leading destination for those from Nagoya.
