Continental Airlines (CO) and Asiana (OZ) are set to increase Guam-bound services to meet the growing demand from Hong Kong and Korean visitors.

OZ increased its Seoul-Guam flights to six weekly from July 20 and is targetting daily flights from September 13 this year.

"The Korean market (to Guam) experienced the worst slowdown for the past two years due to the Korean Air crash in August 1997 and the subsequent IMF-related economic crisis in Korea," Guam Visitors Bureau South Korea representative Hyun-Jung Park said.

Park said, "Since December 1998, monthly Korean visitor arrivals have shown a 99 to 100 per cent increase every month."

CO, which currently stops over at Saipan, will start flying non-stop from Hong Kong to Guam, cutting the flying time to four-and-a-half hours.

From November, CO will increase its two weekly flights to three.

CO sales manager Edward Chong said,"We will use our all-new 737-800. And even if the aircraft is about 30 seats less than the aircraft used now, we will be flying more frequently. All passengers will enjoy new seats with personal TVs, and other new amenities."

Chong said passenger loads from Hong Kong grew from 60 to 70 per cent to 80 to 90 per cent, after CO dropped package rates from $10,000 in early 1998 to four-day packages for $2,890 this year.

CO will increase its package rates for the summer season to HK$4,220 using a more upmarket hotel.
