Singapore is set to become the second Southeast Asian country, after Brunei, to join the United States Visa-Waiver Pilot Program (VWPP).

Officials at the US Embassy in Singapore said Singapore would be part of the program within 60 days.

The scheme allows citizens of participating countries to enter the US with just a return or onward ticket for business or leisure stays no longer than 90 days.

Industry members welcomed the move, which coupled with the competitive long-haul airfares ex-Singapore, will stimulate travel to the US.

National Association of Travel Agents Singapore (NATAS) vice president - outbound and co-chairperson of the Visit USA Committee Robin Yap said, "This sends out a positive signal because one of the travelling consumer's biggest fears is the visa issue. A number of Singaporeans already have multiple entry visas to the US, so this development will have a main impact on those presently without visas to the US."

United Airlines (UA) general manager Singapore Bill Byrne said the removal of visa requirements for Singaporeans would open up UA's market as the US competes for leisure traffic out of Singapore with Europe and Australia/New Zealand.
