The oneworld alliance and Emirates Airline (EK) are discussing EK's possible entry into the airline alliance.

British Airways (BA) sales & marketing manager Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia David Rousham said, "(Oneworld) would like to develop its relationship with Emirates further. Over time, Emirates will have to make a decision as to which alliance it will join. EK would need a partner in order to have a global presence." He said oneworld was also in talks with three other major carriers in the Middle East. Talks with Aer Lingus are ongoing.

EK Group chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said EK will launch its frequent flyer program in April 2000, and is reviewing whether or not to join an alliance next year. He said the Star Alliance had invited EK to join their group before the alliance's launch two years ago, but EK declined as it did not have a mileage program at the time.

Royal Brunei Airlines (BI) is also exploring opportunities for a strategic partnership with EK, according to BI executive director Sheikh Jamaluddin bin Sheikh Mohamed.
