The United States (US) Federal Aviation Administration upgraded its rating of Indonesia's aviation regulations to acceptable, following its 1996 assessment as conditional. The upgrade, which came despite Garuda Indonesia's September 25 crash in Sumatra, means Indonesia meets international safety standards and can fly to or from the US.

The evaluations focus on how well a country supervises its airlines but do not assess the individual airlines.
