A total of 41 organisations have banded together to form the Indonesian Association of Tourist Resorts. The association will prepare a blueprint for tourist resort development in Indonesia, listing problems which may halt development.

The new association is headed until the year 2000 by Jan Arifin of PT Lombok Tourism Development Corp., with Sammy Supit of PT Esa Tama Abai as deputy chairman.

Also on the board are Steve Winokan of PT Bali Turtle Island Development, Felix Parlind-ungan of PT Bakrie Nirwana Resort, Robert Puang Sanur of PT Putra Sentra Prasarana, Tjok Ngurh Swastik of PT Bali Nusa Dua, and Muki Probowinoto of PT Mulia Colliman International.

The Investment Coordinating Board has approved construction of 113 tourist resorts in 17 provinces, 58 per cent of which will be in Java and Bali.

Construction for projects totalling US$5.5 billion reportedly has been slowed due to poor infrastructure and bureaucratic complications.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's hotel development has been lagging behind, with only 836 new hotels with 19,414 rooms opened from January 1994 to January 1996. This is below the Indonesian government's target. The government target is for 100,000 new hotel rooms between April 1994 and March 1999.

Government records show there was a total of 194,551 rooms in 8,674 hotels in June 1996.

Some 29 star-rated hotels with 6,644 rooms are set to open this year.

Next year 18 hotels with 5,924 rooms are due to open.
