Beach Resorts - Laguna gets tough

SPECULATION is buzzing through the island's tour and hotel businesses following a recent Laguna Phuket initiative.

The first here to tackle the problem of kickbacks bleeding revenue out of the system, Laguna has taken the bull by the horns.

With five luxury properties in one integrated resort, Laguna has attracted a host of operators jostling for lucrative day-trip business. Stories of kickbacks reaching as far down the line as kitchen porters may be apocryphal, but are likely not far from the truth.

Laguna's approach is to offer contracts to around 20 operators and close the doors on the rest. Hotel tour desks will be controlled by Laguna Tours. Commissions will be retained in the system.

"Laguna Tours is just a natural extension of our business. It means we can provide a better service, at the same time capturing commissions paid by the tour companies that now 'leak' through a variety of avenues," says managing director Laguna Resorts & Hotels, Thailand, James Batt.

"The commission revenue means we can maintain a service which provides an unbiased, reliable and safe inventory of fun things to do in Phuket," says Batt.

"We go to a great deal of trouble to attract guests but, until now, we haven't tried to help with that vital element of an overseas holiday - selecting from the attractions available."
