UN shipment marks DHL office opening

The first shipment handled by the DHL Worldwide Express office in North Korea was an 11.8-tonne consignment of food and medical supplies for the United Nations World Vision Organisation (World Vision).

The famine relief shipment effectively added North Korea to the DHL network. The consignment was sent from Canada to Hong Kong, then on to Beijing. From Beijing, DHL airlifted it to Pyongyang.

DHL managed the entire process, from logistics to customs documentation.

The office, in Pyongyang's central district, handled more than 100 shipments in its first four weeks of operation, many from foreign companies and their local partners. The majority of outbound shipments were headed for China, with others going to Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and the US.

"With increasing economic ties between the international business community and (North Korea), a fast and reliable air express service to and from the country is essential," technical adviser of DHL's Pyongyang office, Burmaa Byambaa, said. "DHL is delighted to partner the Korean Foreign Transportation Corporation (KFT), to support local economic expansion."

"KFT is pleased to combine our own local expertise and extensive distribution facilities with DHL's international experience and global network," KFT general managing director, Hong Eui Ung, said.

Through its partnership with KFT, DHL covers strategic locations in major business areas of North Korea.

These are Pyongyang, Rajin-Sonbong Free Economic Trade Area in North Hamgyong Province, and Hamheung City, South Hamgyong Province.

The office celebrated its official opening on November 5.
