Press Release
DHL dominates 2007 AFSCAsMACAU (April 25, 2007): DHL dominated the Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards (AFSCAs) tonight, taking home six trophies, including the coveted Best Express Operator title.
It was the 21st anniversary of the AFSCAs - organised by market leading transport and logistics newspaper Cargonews Asia - and several hundred transport, logistics and supply chain executives from around the region gathered at the Macau Fisherman's Wharf Convention and Exhibition Centre to celebrate the event.
DHL have now won the Best Express Operator award for 21 consecutive years despite fierce competition from the other finalists, FedEx and UPS.
Macau SAR Transport Minister Liu Shi Yao told the assembled guests that the implementation of large-scale investment projects had stimulated the logistics industry in the territory and created many business opportunities.
The increasing air freight volumes passing through Macau International Airport saw the operator winning the Best Emerging Airport award for airports handling less that 500,000 tonnes a year. With an average cargo growth of over 20 percent a year for the past five years, Macau Airport was a well-deserved winner.
The world's biggest container carrier, Maersk Line, maintained its dominance of the liner awards, taking home three, including Best Global Shipping Line. Singapore's PSA International beat off Hutchison Port Holdings and DP World to take the Best Global Container Terminal Operator award, and the Port of Singapore also scooped the Best Seaport - Asia title.
In the air cargo business Both Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Ltd (Hactl)and Cathay Pacific flew the Hong Kong flag by taking the respective awards for Best Air Cargo Terminal - Asia, and Best Air Cargo Carrier - Asia, although Singapore again went top of the table with Changi International Airport winning the Asia's Best Airport.
Other big winners on the night were DP World (winning AFSCAs for both their Jebel Ali Terminal in Dubai (best Seaport Middle East) and their Terminal in Hong Kong (Best Container Terminal in Asia under 4m teu / year), Amsterdam Schiphol (Best Air Cargo Terminal - Europe, and Best Airport Europe) and SkyTeam Cargo (Best Air Freight Alliance).
FedEx also made it a double with Best All Cargo Airline award and Best Air Cargo Carrier - North America.
Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award was Anthony Lau, Chairman of BALtrans Holdings. Lau was co-founder of BALtrans in 1982 and under his leadership, the Hong Kong-listed freight forwarding and logistics Group has gone from being a regional player to a global transport and logistics giant.
The AFSCAs are widely regarded as the most authoritative and prestigious awards for the industry in Asia and the evening is one of the highlights of the Asian freight industry calendar.
