KUALA LUMPUR (Malaysia): DHL cleaned up at the 2006 Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards (AFSCAs) last night (April 27), taking home six awards, including the coveted Best Express Operator title.
Hundreds of top transport executives gathered in the ballroom of Kuala Lumpur's Shangri-la Hotel to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the AFSCAs, an annual awards ceremony organised by Cargonews Asia's to reward Asia's transport and logistics providers for a year of outstanding work. Cargonews Asia is the region's leading freight and logistics publication.
It was the 20th consecutive year DHL have won the Best Express Operator, a stunning achievement considering the fierce competition from the other two finalists, giant global integrators FedEx and UPS. By the end of the evening, DHL Asia Pacific CEO Scott Price had six awards on his table.
Malaysia's Minister of Transport Y.B. Dato Sri Chan Kong Choi, the guest of honour, told the assembled executives that the country's port and airport infrastructure was world class. This was reflected in the list of finalists with one Malaysian airline, two airports and two seaports making it into the top three of their respective categories.
Companies in the Netherlands were also big winners, and Dutch ambassador to Malaysia, Lody Embrechts, was on hand to both witness and collect the awards. Rotterdam again scooped Best Seaport - Europe and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport took home two awards, Best Airport - Europe and Best Air Cargo Terminal Operator - Europe, and Europe Container Terminals won Best Container Terminal - Europe.
Other big winners were APL, which edged out Maersk Sealand (now Maersk Line) to take the Best Shipping Line - Transpacific award, Evergreen Marine Transport, which successfully defended its Best Shipping Line - Intra-Asia award, and Shenzhen Baoan International Airport in China that held on to the Best Emerging Airport award that it first won last year.
Singapore operators maintained their good showing at the AFSCAs with PSA International beating Hutchison Port Holdings and DP World to win the Best Global Terminal Operating Company award. Jurong Port held on to the award for Best Emerging Container Terminal Operator Asia, and Singapore Airlines Cargo won the Best Air cargo Carrier - Asia award for the 13th time in 20 years.
Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award was Datuk Mohd Sidik Shaik Osman, Chairman of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) and Chief Executive of Senai Airport. Datuk Sidik has been a driving force in Malaysia's vibrant transport industry for decades and took PTP into the world's Top 20 ports. It now handles an annual throughput of more than four million containers a year.
The AFSCAs are widely regarded as the most authoritative and prestigious awards for the industry in Asia and the evening is one of the highlights of the Asian freight industry calendar.
