The 2005 Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards
HONG KONG: Hundreds of top transport executives gathered on the waterfront of the worlds busiest port last night (April 27) to celebrate the 2005 Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards (AFSCAs).
In the glittering ballroom of Hong Kong's Intercontinental Hotel, Asia's transport and logistics providers were rewarded for a year of outstanding work by Cargonews Asia, the region's leading freight and logistics publication.
Now in its 19th year, the AFSCAs are widely regarded as the most authoritative and prestigious awards for the industry in Asia and one of the highlights of the Asian freight industry calendar.
For a stunning 19th consecutive year, DHL won the Best Express Operator award, coming in ahead of rival global express operators FedEx and UPS However, it was still a winning night for FedEx, which took home five awards in total.
Other notable winners were Maersk Sealand, PSA International and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The world's third biggest carrier, Evergreen Marine Transport, scooped the award for Best Shipping Line Intra-Asia.
In a dead heat, Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals (Hactl) and Singapore Airport Terminal Services (SATS) took the Best Air Cargo Terminal Asia. Singapore also had a good showing with Singapore Changi Airport winning the Best Airport Asia award, Port of Singapore taking the Best Seaport Asia award and PSA Singapore going home with the Best Container Terminal Asia.
A significant winner of the Best Emerging Airport Asia was Shenzhen Baoan International Airport.
Winner of the "Life-Time Achievement Award" was Dr Victor Fung, Chairman and CEO of Li & Fung Distribution Group and Chairman of the Hong Kong Airport Authority. Under Dr Fung's guidance, Li & Fung grew from a small family business to a giant trading house and the world's leading supply chain management company.
More than 12,500 readers of Cargonews Asia, the leading industry newspaper in the region, were polled to select companies that are the best service providers in 41 industry-specific categories.
The AFSCAs' special role is that they are the only Asian freight awards in which the customers, and not a panel of judges, are asked to choose the best service providers. Nominated companies can track their performance and gauge customer satisfaction levels by watching their standings change from one year to the next.
The awards recognise excellence in companies from Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia, and reflect the global nature of the cargo industry serving Asia's Shippers.
All returned nomination and final ballot forms were verified by internationally respected auditor, Ernst & Young. The top three finalists in each award category all received the top number of votes from the final ballot paper, which contained a shortlist of the top 10 nominees for each award. The AFSCA ballot papers are numbered and designed so as to prohibit companies voting for themselves.
Cargonews Asia, the organiser of the Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards, is a fortnightly newspaper, which has been published every two weeks for the last 28 years. The paper is dedicated to covering news from the international and regional cargo industry for senior executives in Asia.
The core readership of Cargonews Asia are shippers - importers & exporters who use freight transport services - hence the term, "The Shippers' Choice Awards", which is associated with the AFSCAs.
